1. Identify specific goals, rewards, and consequences. Write down 2-3 small realistic goals for yourself per week or month and identify a reward once complete. For example, a manicure/pedicure, a special dinner date with a bridesmaid, a day at the beach with your maid of honor, or a weekend free of chores are all excellent rewards! In another column, identify a consequence for not reaching those goals. Challenge yourself! Think about something that you want to avoid at all costs and hold yourself accountable.
"I wanted to look nicer for the wedding, mostly for the pictures," says newlywed Donna Eck-David, who was married on April 3, 2004. She tried watching what she ate and avoiding the cafeteria at work for months before the big day. But she finally resorted to drinking a dieter's tea containing laxatives a few weeks before the wedding, to speed up her weight-loss efforts.
The bride plan is specifically designed to help you slim down and stay healthy during an exciting but stressful time in your life. This is not a time when you should use fad diets, quick fix plans, or celebrity-endorsed routines. Instead, meet your daily caloric needs with clean foods: fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, lean meat or protein choices, low-fat dairy, whole grains and a limited amount of healthy fat. A smart wedding weight loss plan will ensure that you stay healthy and radiant for your special day.
Starting in your 40s, it's easier than ever for the pounds to creep on—and tougher to take them off. Thanks to a slowing metabolism you could be burning 300 fewer calories per day than you did in your early 20s, according to the American Council on Exercise. What's more, falling estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause (which begin in your early 40s) can cause insulin sensitivity, which makes it harder for your body to control the amount of sugar in your blood, says Caroline Cederquist, MD, a board-certified bariatric surgeon and founder of the meal delivery service BistroMD. This can make your blood sugar levels more prone to spiking and crashing, which can increase your urge to snack—especially on high-carb, sugary junk, Cederquist says.
Lower Metabolism: There are a couple of things that happen to your metabolism after the age of 40. First, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) decreases and, second, you expend less total energy (TEE) during exercise. Some experts suggest metabolism can decrease by about 5% for every decade after 40, which means you need about 60-100 fewer calories every 10 years. If you sit more, eat more, exercise less and deal with more stress throughout that decade, you'll probably need even fewer calories than that. Add that to the fact that you burn fewer calories during exercise and you've got yourself an equation for weight gain.
Great question. We almost always get our grass-fed bones from the farmer’s market. We traveled around the country living out of an RV for the past year, and have been able to find great pastured beef bones at farmer’s markets just about everywhere we go. To make it easier, though, when you find a good source, stock up on the marrow bones and freeze them for later.
This “lone gunman” theory that puts sugar at the center of everything that’s gone wrong with our diet sounds convincing, and it certainly sells a lot of books. But so far, the evidence is underwhelming that sugar is much or any worse than other refined carbs like white flour. However, since so many of the junk calories we consume are in the form of sugar, it deserves its newfound status as public-health enemy number one. (So long, saturated fat.)

I've had a love-hate relationship with my body since the first grade. I always appreciated that I was able to play marathon games of jump rope and climb any tree on the playground, but I began to struggle with my body when a group of 6-year-olds in my dance class snickered at me because my pink, sparkly recital costume was a size or two larger than all of theirs. (Did you know body image issues start way younger than we thought?)
Don’t have a dinner companion? Try eating in front of a mirror instead. According to a study published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research, people who ate in front of a mirror were more acutely aware of their poor food choices, finding them less pleasurable.
