You know the ones: In 30 seconds or less, you watch a mysterious pair of hands layer cookie dough with Oreos with brownie mix. Bake, cut, and oh how yummy—and insanely, ridiculously, break-the-chair fattening. “The internet and social media sites are basically making you fat,” Lisa Hayim, MS, RD, and founder of The WellNecessities, told us for our article on The 30 Worst Flat Belly Mistakes Women Make. “If it isn’t 25 ways to eat tater tots then it’s [another] national [something] day. The internet has made it basically impossible to stay away from cravings and indulgences. These are not excuses to eat unhealthy food.” Next time you see one of those videos, ask yourself how you could make it healthier—and if you can’t, click out of it and never look back.
Is it just me, or does it seem like all of the talk about fat-loss for the over 40 population is all about pills, powders, and potions? Why doesn’t anybody want to talk about good old-fashioned training and proper, balanced eating? It’s much more common to see remedies from the supplement industry making headlines, versus taking the challenge into your own hands and working toward a more practical and proven solution.
Finding the time to get to the gym every other day while planning one of the biggest moments of your life is nearly impossible. In-home workouts cut down on the travel time and keep you closer to home (where you might be needed), but even that takes away from the energy you will need for tastings, fittings, and a whole host of other meetings before your wedding day rolls around. Well we have ways to slim down with little to no effort and guess what? Some of them actually involve buying food! We tapped world-renowned fitness expert Nicole Winhoffer for tips on how you can look your best on your big day.
Thermogenic supplements are one of the most common types of weight-loss supplements. The banned dietary supplement ephedra was a thermogenic supplement; others include ma huang and bitter orange extract. Supplements that are sometimes used as fat burners include chromium, carnitine, caffeine, conjugated linoleic acid, green tea, kelp, forskolin, fucoxanthin and capsaicin.

I was a vegan for ten years before I started eating meat again recently due to low energy and a few health issues. I started with bone broths and putting those in my beans (that I was soaking, sprouting and 2x boiling). Then I moved to eggs. I also found a good source for raw milk and made my own kefir. My body loved all of these things and my energy

So, what is a fat burner? As explained in the journal Obesity Reviews, the term "fat burner" is used to describe "nutrition supplements that are claimed to acutely increase fat metabolism or energy expenditure, impair fat absorption, increase weight loss, increase fat oxidation during exercise, or somehow cause long-term adaptations that promote fat metabolism."[1] However, that's a wide range of functions, and in pill form especially, it can mean a lot of things! So, let's dig a little deeper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbz8yhJUF7M
"I think eating well and moving consistently in a way that I could sustain for a lifetime allowed me to focus on other things instead of getting too stressed about how I'd look for one day. When dress shopping, I tried on one pretty outrageous-looking dress and, much to my surprise, I loved it. It was very form-fitting, had an open back, and spaghetti straps. It felt very daring, exposing, and exciting to wear something that didn't leave much to the imagination. It was not something I expected to like, yet I think I felt comfortable and confident in it because of the work I'd done in the past. When it came to my wedding, I felt great and had the time of my life! I was happy with my body and I didn't really give it a lot of thought. My body wasn't perfect then and never will be, but I'm good with it." —Amber Leonard Thome, 30
L‐carnitine: This stimulant-free amino acid has been physique athletes' secret weapon for decades. Taken once or twice daily with food, it can also help your body convert stored body fat into energy, leaving you leaner and more defined. It does this by breaking up fatty acids so the body can use them for fuel. As Jim Stoppani, Ph.D., explains in "Your Expert Guide to L-Carnitine," it has also been shown in studies to support recovery from workouts, reduce muscle damage, and even reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness.
The cabbage soup diet? Really? Just no. Restricting calories and losing body fat too quickly can wreak havoc on insulin, leptin, ghrelin and other hormones, prompting a surge in hunger and a slump in metabolism. These effects can last for more than a year, even after the diet is abandoned, according to a 2011 study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Yo-yo diets also prompt decline in dopamine, which means you’re left feeling unmotivated and sluggish. Make sure you’re not also guilty of any of these 25 Things You Do That Slow Your Metabolism.
Regular exercise is key to weight loss and maintenance. And since there’s no consensus on whether the ideal workout is aerobic or resistance training, your best bet is to do a little of both. Resistance training is especially important for people over 30, who will otherwise begin to lose bone density. Contrary to popular belief, abdominal crunches are not going to melt away belly fat, though they will help build muscle that could help define the area. And since muscle mass has a higher resting metabolic rate and energy expenditure than fat, it could help you trim down. Mix up your workout routine with these exercises that flatten your belly—without a single crunch.
If you want to shrink your gut, get enough protein in your diet. In this case, about 25 percent of calories. Why? For starters, protein makes you feel full and helps you build muscle (which increases metabolism, thereby making it easier to lose weight). Just as important, high-protein diets have been shown to be the best way of attacking belly fat. In one study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, Danish researchers put 65 people on either a 12 percent protein diet or a 25 percent protein diet. The low-protein dieters lost an average of 11 pounds, which isn't bad. But the high-protein subjects lost an average of 20 pounds--including twice as much abdominal fat as the low-protein group.
2. Boxing: I let my clients do boxing as I feel that it’s a great way to pump up your heart rate and increase sweating. Higher the heart rate the more calories they’ll be burning. Usually I instruct my clients to do one minute of punches or combinations usually on boxing pads but can also be done on a punch bag followed by 30 seconds rest. Usually I repeat this exercise several times until my clients are fit. Then I let them hold the plank in between rounds as an active rest.

Great article! Thanks for finally demystifying the whole question and even though you said a lot of things that we have all read over and over again, the way you presented the information was awesome. I’ve hear a whole lot of great things about Ideal Lean products lately. Looks like I will be making an investment soon to supplement what I am doing with diet and exercise.
1. Track your food. That means all of it, from the spoonful of soup you sampled for your reception menu to the little bites of cake you taste. These "hidden" calories are easy to gloss over but can really add up. Plus, research shows that the simple act of tracking your food can help you lose twice as much weight than if you don't track at all (mental tracking does not count). If you do nothing else during the final days and weeks before your wedding, track your food diligently every day.
Eating protein at breakfast is especially important. "The longest period of muscle breakdown occurs at night, when you're sleeping and not eating for hours at a time," explains Dr. Paddon-Jones. "If you skip breakfast or start your day with a protein-light meal—like a bagel, toast, or cereal—you're missing out on flipping that muscle-building switch back on."
Dinner and lunch were pretty similar. I'd either have what I dubbed a "Sad Salad" of spinach, crunchy water veggies (cucumber and snow peas), and lean protein (homemade chicken or salmon with no sauces) — all drizzled with EVOO and a lemon squeeze. Snooze. Otherwise, I would cook veggies (such as steamed green beans or asparagus) and have it with the aforementioned lean meat or fish. Sometimes, I would even have the eggs (see: breakfast!) for dinner, which I found very easy to digest. Occasionally, I'd enjoy a green smoothie (kale, spinach, blueberries, almond milk) with pea protein powder.
The benefits of Greek yogurt are far and wide while making your figure tighter and slimmer. High-quality Greek yogurt is low in calories (less than 100 for 6 oz.), has a very high amount of protein (20 grams), and provides your gut with some much-needed probiotics. Flavored, non-Greek yogurts, on the other hand, are often packed with additives that harm your health and can even make you hungrier. If you’re not a Greek yogurt fan, do know that it can be an acquired taste—but mixing in some berries, walnuts, or homemade granola might just become your new, belly busting addiction!

At rest, your body burns about one calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour, or 91 calories for a 200-pound guy. Run five miles in an hour and you burn an extra 686 calories, which sounds like a lot until you realize it’s the equivalent of a large slice of cheesecake, which you can inhale in less time than it takes to change out of your sweaty running gear.

Many women have trouble sleeping during menopause due to hot flashes, night sweats, stress and the other fun stuff that goes along with low estrogen levels.  Migraines anyone??  The bummer is poor sleep is linked to hunger and weight gain because of two more hormones:  ghrelin (the “feed me” hormone) and leptin (the “I’m full” hormone).  Here’s a short blog I wrote on that topic.  If you’re sleep deprived, these hormones get out of whack.

For example, you might not realize just how much you eat when you go out to happy hour with friends. But if you take the split second to take a step back and make yourself aware of that fact, you’re more able to make a healthy decision. “The awareness and then planning and coming up with strategies for what else I can be doing—that might give me the same benefit of eating those comfort foods that make me feel better,” says Gagliardi.

"It wasn’t until 2015 when I was diagnosed with diabetes and PCOS that I started doing my homework and took control of my health. I stopped caring about a wedding dress. I thought more about where I was going to be in 20, 30, 40 years from now. That’s when I started running, lifting weights, and learning how to eat right. My entire mentality shifted from how I would look in a dress to how I could improve my body inside the dress. Now, I'm training for my first half-marathon, I can deadlift 200 pounds, and you can see my biceps when I flex. I weigh 145 pounds, wear size six to eight, and am no longer diabetic. If I wanted to, I could probably fit into that dress. But for now I am just happy wearing my regular clothes and knowing that I am actually healthy." —Athena Warner, 29

Diabetes is the new epidemic of our culture.  The effect of Obesity on diabetes is a one-to-one relationship.  Diabetes is really the inability for the body to metabolize sugar.  The fatty tissue actually makes insulin unavailable for the body to digest sugar.  This causes the sugar levels to rise pound for pound with the extra weight.  The real problem is that if you use insulin shots to control sugars, they cause weight gain!  This is a round-and-round game that ends in Kidney failure, amputation, heart attack and so on.

Here’s how to rock a Wild Workout: Warm up with light cardio, mobility, and dynamic stretching (at least 60 seconds).  Work out and get your blood pumping for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest.  Repeat 10 times for a total of 5 minutes. You can do simple exercises like jumping rope or pedaling as hard as you can on a stationary bike. If you’re more athletic, try burpees or hill-sprints.  Do whatever full-body movement is best for you—but do it as hard as you can and don’t forget the 10 second rests (hint: if you’re doing it right, you definitely won’t forget to rest between sets!).
Your parents weren’t kidding about how important veggies are for a healthy body. What they probably didn’t tell you, however, was that snacking on veggies is also one of the easiest ways to shed unwanted belly fat, too. According to a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, opting for non-starchy veggies, like cauliflower, broccoli, and cucumber, as snacks helped overweight kids shed 17 percent of their visceral fat while improving their insulin sensitivity over a five-year period. Think snacking on veggies will leave you hungry? The 20 Most Filling Fruits and Veggies will have your belly satisfied in no time.
As I began to take control of my body, I also began to take control of my life. I found that the more positive I was about myself, the more positive I was about my life. I also was able to identify areas that were negatively impacting me. This empowerment gave me the courage to make changes and let go of those influences that were negatively affecting me. This was somewhat of an ‘aha’ process for me – the understanding that I was in control of all aspects of my life. This was the feeling that I had been looking for and I had finally found it and the understanding that it had always been there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp4EvMoeYq0

Capsaicin may be helpful for increasing metabolism and fat burning, but in longer-term studies, people tended to regain weight lost with the help of capsaicin supplements just as quickly as those taking a placebo. Participants in the study stopped consuming the full dose because of its strong flavor, notes the 2007 American Journal of Physiology -- Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology review article.
For weight loss purposes, aim for 300 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio exercise or 150 minutes of vigorous cardio exercise each week, along with at least two strength-training workouts. The cardio helps you burn more calories to build up the necessary calorie deficit, while the strength training helps you maintain muscle and build more while you lose weight. Adding muscle is a more effective way to increase your metabolism than taking thermogenic supplements, as muscle takes more calories to maintain than fat. The more exercise you get and the more vigorously you exercise, the more benefits you'll experience in regards to both weight loss and changes in body composition, according to a study published in Archives of Internal Medicine in 2004. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJezMYvf8Ss
